Avatar 2: The Way of Water: A Battle in Space? Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, the Avatar screenwriters have disclosed that the sequel nearly sent the Na'vi into outer space.
The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron, The Way of Water took audiences beyond Pandora's jungles into the beautiful waters of its oceans. According to screenwriters Rick Java, and Amanda Silver, it almost led the characters out of Pandora. An early script featured a scene in which the Na'vi went into outer space. This was discussed by Entertainment Weekly.
Jaffa stated that there was an initial idea for a space war with the Na'vi. We talked about that idea a lot. But we were still struggling. What would it do with our story? Jim replied, "Well, I'll give you a couple of weeks." Jim went on and wrote the entire script. He also wrote a fantastic script.
Although the premise is intriguing, focusing solely on Pandora's oceans might have been the best decision due to the established themes of nature conservation and wildlife. Although the notion of Na'vi traveling into outer space was eventually scrapped, the concept did make it to comics when Avatar: the High Ground came out. This three-volume series from Dark Horse Comics tells the story of the conflict between the Na’vi and RDA following the RDA's revengeful return to Pandora.
Cameron was also responsible for overseeing the writing of the sequel scripts. Silver explained that the idea came out of six months spent in a writers room. The scripts were to be broken down into beat-by-beat three movies. Each movie would tell a bigger story, but would each have its own unique voice. The franchise began to realize its potential as the scripts were developed. Screenwriting partners explained that the scripts for the sequel were so long that they had to be split in two. The challenge was how to fit it all in while still making the film emotionally resonant and not rushing? That's really how our movie — the first one — became two," Silver said.
After Avatar : The Way of Water is released, the third installment of this franchise will be available in cinemas from December 2024. Despite being secretive, reports indicate that the movie will be about a new Na’vi tribe, called the Ash People. Lo'ak (the second son of Jake, and Neytiri) will play a central part in the story. Two additional films are in development, along with the theatrical debut Avatar3. Fans can look forward to what Cameron has planned for Pandora's future with Avatar.
