Thor: Love and Thunder Costume designer Mayes Rubeo Explains the Inspiration behind New Thor Suits
Mayes, C. Rubeo is a costume designer who has shared some details about the design of Thor's new supersuit in Thor. Love and Thunder. When designing the super suits, it was important to follow comic lore and be respectful of Natalie Portman veganism.
Rubeo, a costume designer told Deadline that she used her knowledge about the thunder gods' lore as well as the old comics in order to give Dr. Jane Foster (Portman), an updated appearance. It was inspired by the old comics. We try to honour those iconic costumes in a way and transport them to a modern era with technology,' Rubeo said of Portman's costume when she wields Mjölnir and becomes Mighty Thor. While she kept true to the legends, she used modern materials to give her a modern appearance that was more appealing to the public. "The audience wants something truly amazing. They want new materials that can be flexible and multi-purpose.
VIDEO OF COLLIDERS FOR THE DAYThor was given flashier colors to match his modern appearance and reflect his personality. "Thor is experiencing a time of insecurity." Imagine when an animal wants to be more intimidating—he grows bigger and gets shinier and brighter,' Rubeo said, explaining that because Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is attempting to get over his ex-girlfriend, Jane, in Thor: Love and Thunder, he has forgone the silver and black of past suits in favour of vibrant golds and blues. Rubeo calls the suit "insecure Thor clothing."
Similar to Gorr, the God Butcher ( Christian bale), transformation from black and white was significant for his characterisation. Rubeo stated, in acknowledgment of the origin lore, that Gorr used to be all black in comic books. Although black was used extensively in other characters' costumes it was necessary to use a muted colour to contrast with the bright and vivid colours of the heroes. This was to reflect a character that has been forced to live in the shadow realm, and has since lost all of his possessions. The villain does not have to wear black in order to be one. She said that white is very frightening and makes the villain stand out in the darkness. "His complexion can change from white to darker, sometimes his flesh is lighter but he is very pale." This was a striking sight to witness.
Rubeo made sure she played the roles and the suit-wearing actors. Rubeo was particularly careful about the materials used to create Portman's character. She sourced materials from non-animal products or animals in order to respect her veganism. Her costumes are mostly made of plastic or synthetic materials. Rubeo stated, "I respect her so deeply, and the least that I could do was to accommodate this to her costume."
